Sussex Biodiversity Record Centre

About: This partnership project, hosted by the Sussex Wildlife Trust, aims to continually improve the biodiversity evidence base for the whole of Sussex, including administrative counties and the Brighton and Hove unitary authority area. The Sussex Biodiversity Record Centre has a particular focus on species and habitats.

The Biodiversity Record Centre works with many partners including local planning authorities, government agencies, conservation bodies and other organisations enabling more informed planning, decision making and research. The project collaborates with the local biological recording community, strengthening relationships and expanding networks of naturalists, ecologists and recording schemes across the county and facilitate the ever-greater amounts of biodiversity data

Sussex has a vibrant and energetic biological recording community with many independent wildlife recording groups and societies. By strengthening relationships with these groups, and the wider network of naturalists, ecologists and recording schemes active in Sussex, the Record Centre facilitates sharing of ever-greater amounts of biodiversity data.

So far, the scheme has been successful in stewarding habitat data, disseminating ecological and boundary information for local wildlife sites and managing over 10 million species occurrence records from across Sussex.

Connection to the Biosphere and its principles: The Sussex Biodiversity Record Centre engages the public and local development with biodiversity conservation and data collection. The centre supplies local people with knowledge and resources to make informed decisions within the local area.
