King´s Castle, originally thought to have been the main gate to the town, became known as the Castle due to the expansion of the town to North Gate (John´s Gate).

Over time, the use of the castle has altered greatly. It has been used as an arsenal, a hospital, a school, and most recently a forge used for shoemaking for horses transporting dairy from the nearby creamery.
