Location - Johannesburg, South Africa.
Groups Involved - Supported by 18 members. Two glass package manufacturers, the majority of food and beverage brand owners manufacturers who package their products in glass such as Coca Cola, Distell, Paarl Vallei etc. TGRC is funded exclusively by the levies paid by these brand owners for every ton of glass purchased from glass manufacturers.
Background - South Africa consumes more than 3.1 million tonnes of glass annually. 2/3s of this glass is reusable and can be diverted from landfills. Glass accounts for 4.5% of South Africa's waste. Glass requires a lot of energy and fossil fuel combustion to be produced, by glass not being recycled often in South Africa it is contributing to an enhanced greenhouse gas effect occurring as a lot of GHG emissions will be emitted to accommodate for the large production of glass. Since TGRC started, they have prevented approximately 220,000 tonnes of C02 from being emitted into the atmosphere.
Aims - The aims of TGRC is to increase glass recycling rates. In 13 years they have increased the glass recycling rate from 13% to 42% in South Africa. They are aiming to further increase this percentage. TGRC aims to promote the recycling of glass bottles. TGRC aims to divert 80% of glass waste into being recycled and not ending up in landfill sites.
Resources Recycled - Glass bottles are collected across the country and are preserved. These glass bottles are then sold back to the glass package manufacturers so that they can reuse them for future products to sell.
Economic Impacts - Jobs are being created from this new recycling industry, it is helping to boost money into the economy and tackle poverty.
Environmental Impacts - As stated before, 220,000 tonnes of C02 has been saved from being emitted into the atmosphere due to the recycling of glass bottles. This is contributing to Climate Change Mitigation as its reducing the causation of climate change as less GHG are being emitted into the atmosphere.
