Background:
Has a BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) rating of excellence. These are some of the factors that contirbuted to achieve this status: - Insultaion levels exceed current building regulations by 20% - Local sourcing of materisals reduces the amount of energy needed to transport the building componants. - Surface water is returned to the natural aquifier via interceptors and soak aways. - Low flush toilets installed and spray taps used to save water. - 6kw wind turbine used to generate electricity for external and internal power. The use of public transport is encouraged due to the close proximity to the nearest bus stop and live updates of the nearest bus stop displayed inside the buildings.
Contribution to Environmental Citizenship:
The Westergate Business Centre has incorporated solutions to reduce energy use in effective and innovative ways, which will also reduce overall running costs of the facility. There is also a lasting influence on the people that work there due to the effective use of public transport which not only would reduce emissions on their commute to work but may also lead to a lifestyle change so that public transport is used more regularly by the individuals.
