Background Information

The Park Farm Shop aims to source as locally as possibly with particular interest in seasonal produce. By getting their produce straight from the farmers or producers themselves it is fresher, has less unrecyclable packaging and demands less travel and energy than being sent to multiple addresses. Depending on the change in seasons some of the produce available is labelled organic with consistently the cheese, yogurt and juices are both organic and locally sourced. As well as providing a range of some locally sourced, organic produce the Park Farm Shop benefits the community with student discounts to encourage healthy eating and promotions on the 'best in season' produce which all help to reduce food miles and waste. Along with this the team often visit local agricultural events to teach children about the fruit and vegetables, where they come from, how they grow and why it's important to eat them. In future the shop also hopes to run a weekly box scheme of 'wonky veg' that would otherwise be discarded or wasted despite it's nutritional value. This will give those on a tighter budget a chance to still source food locally and maintain a healthy nutritional diet. The Park Farm Shop also sells local products alongside their fruit and vegetables, these include: - Local organic cheeses from Sussex, - Local butter, - Local hummus and falafel, - Local milk from Ringmer (both organic and inorganic), - Brighton & Hove honey, - Local apple juices (both organic and inorganic), - Local jams and chutneys, - Local sources from Sussex, - Local icecream, - Local nutroasts, - Organic, free range eggs, - Local free range meats from Lewes,

Contribution to Environmental Citizenship

The Park farmshop would be catagorised as weak anthropocentric due to their focus on sustainability and the impact that humans (as consumers and farmers) have on the environment. By buying as much produce locally as possible this reduces the pollution involved with 'air miles' and also helps to promote seasonal produce which is the most environmentally friendly way of eating - local and seasonal. As well as this, the aim to reduce waste and packaging by presenting food in single or small groups to be bought 'waste free' encourages people to only buy the produce that they need and to reduce their unrecyclable waste which similarly implies the responsibility that humans have to ensure that anything impacting the environment is sustainable (e.g. recyclable, less food waste)
