Albion in the Community

Background Information

Albion in the Community is the charity of the Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club. The charity works closely with the Brighton and Hove Food Partnership and has worked with over 10,000 local primary school children to deliver workshops promoting healthy eating and why it is so important. The pupils involved are often given tasks and challenges to complete revolving around healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle which will enable the schools to win a variety of prizes and awards. They also deliver Community Youth Champions courses of which over 150 children age 8-18 have completed which allows them to run and teach physical activity workshops and sessions about healthy eating to those in the community. Albion in the community also creates programmes such as Breakfast Clubs to help pupils achieve a healthy and nutritious breakfast, also allowing them to join in activities to encourage heathy exercising. For after school there is the Zip Zap club, partnered with Brighton & Hove City Council and the Brighton & Hove Food Partnership. The Zip Zap club offers pupils more chances to get involved in new physical activities and maintaining a healthy diet with fruits and vegetables. Below are some of the statistics and figures recorded about this charity work and it's impact on the community:

''Of those who attended workshops in 2013-14, 88% reported improved knowledge of food groups and the health benefits of eating a balanced diet, 92% have a greater awareness of which foods contain key nutrients for their health, and 84% have greater confidence to make healthier food choices.''

Albion in the Community also runs multiple sessions teaching disability football throughout areas of Sussex including Brighton & Hove. These sessions are available to anybody with a disability aged 5+ with qualified coaches to give everybody in the community a chance to play football and gain skills.

Contribution to Environmental Citizenship

By partnering with the Brighton and Hove Food Partnership, Albion in the community provides healthy eating sessions for primary children up to adults to promote a healthy lifestyle. Their contribution to environmental citizenship relates to weak anthropocentrism as Environment Canada stated: “Environmental citizenship is a personal commitment to learning more about the environment and to taking responsible environmental action”. By teaching the importance of nutritious food (fruits and vegetables), Albion in the community are helping to share the message of learning about the environment and how as individuals you need to look after yourself using the Earth's natural resources (nutritious, unprocessed food) but also that, in turn, you also need to look after the Environment.
