Background Information:
Magpie Recycling was set up in 1990 at Hanover Community Centre. Three volunteers would collect cans and glass, plus office paper from a small number of local residents and businesses, including the Universities. It became a Co-operative in 1992 and expanded its services. In 1996 Magpie began a GreenBox Kerbside collection scheme collecting recyclables from households. Magpie now has around 2000 customers throughout Brighton & Hove. The aim of Magpie was to increase recycling rates and to get people thinking about recycling. To make sure they are recycling in an environmentally friendly way the collection vehicles are powered by electric. Not only do magpie deal with household waste they offer services to businesses from shredding confidentially and collecting their waste recyclables.
Contribution to Environmental Citizenship:
Magpie promotes environmental citizenship through promoting recycling and encouraging people to up-cycle things like furniture. They also use green energy.
