Community21 has selected some case study communities and projects to share across the network to inspire and inform others. Should we be featuring yours? If so get in touch.
Plot 22 is an allotment and meeting place which provides opportunities for people of all ages and experience in the city to get involved in planting, growing and eating healthy, seasonal food.
Alongside growing and harvesting are workshops, therapeutic sessions, activities and small communal events which promote sustainable living by encouraging and demonstrating simple ways to grow food and make compost. The allotment also provides therapeutic opportunities for people to feel better and experience respite from ill health (especially those on very low incomes).
PLOT 22 links with other organisations in Brighton & Hove who signpost people to their garden days. These organisations have included: Harvest, Brighton YMCA, Business Action On Homelessness, Mind, The Deaf Association, Probation, Inspire, Brighton Women’s Centre, Conway Court children’s Centre and the BMECP.
How is this environmental citizenship?
Plot 22 contributes to citizenship for the environment as it demonstrates to people in the community that environmental sustainability and increased self-sufficiency/food security can be achieved in a sociable and enjoyable way. People are encouraged to make sustainable life choices which benefit the whole community, whilst enriching their lives with local, nutritious foods.
