The former co-op department store on Baker Street, just off London Road, has been empty for several years and had been an eye-sore in the local environment. Although the space had been used to support local art projects, also by the London Road Local Action Team, had really just been a gap on the high street. In December 2012, after campaigning by the LRLAT, the space was converted into Student housing, while retaining the original structure of the building.
This is citizenship for the environment because it is turning an empty building into something that is useful and beneficial to the community. It has become more appealing to the citizens in Brighton and is a space that is very useful to a lot of students.
