Changing Gears is a community based bike repair and restoration project run by Groundwork South, a not for profit organisation working with local communities to improve their quality of life. Changing gears offers training in bike maintenance, restoration and the sale of second hand or 'pre-loved' bikes and also provides volunteering and accredited training opportunities for people of all ages.
Profit earned by the project is used to sustain the project and allow training and volunteering opportunities. Helping people to enjoy the benefits of cycling: improved personal skills, confidence and health as well as better air quality for Lewes road, cycle safety and access to affordable transport. Cycling has positive effect on the environment too reducing waste, congestion, air pollution and CO2 emissions.
Key project aims:
Increased affordable transport, particularly for people on low income and young people
Improved health, fitness and well-being in the local area
Increased skills, confidence and employment opportunities through cycle training and volunteering
Greater cycle safety and reduced cycle-related accidents and casualties
Reduced air pollution and CO2 emissions
Reduced waste and landfill through re-use and recycling of bikes and bike parts
Increased community cohesion through community engagement
