This is Brunswick and Adelaide largest recycling point. It is supplied by CityClean rubbish collection and is used by locals in the area. Due to the layout of the areas housing there are now only communal waste points. This replaced the individual black box recycling and bins in 2013.
There are 3 types of bins: main waste, mixed recycling (cardboard, plastic and metal) and mixed glass.
In a review of the scheme Brighton & Hove council found that 35% of respondents recycled more and 64% said that they found the recycling scheme easier. Councillor Pete West, chair of the city’s environment and sustainability committee, said: "Not only have residents been encouraged to recycle more, but their local environment has improved, with less clutter and cleaner streets.”
The photograph of the overflowing bin shows evidence of locals utilising the avaliable facilities - engaging in citizenship. However it also shows that there are issues of poor maintainance of bins in the area which may lead locals to become reluctant to participate with efficient waste disposal in the future.
This contributes to Environmental Citizenship as it reduces litter on the streets and encourages a higher rate of accurate recycling.
