Brighthelm community garden compost bin

The composting project aims to benefit over 600 households in Brighton. There is one situated here and at St Peters Church that have been running since August 2011. These are in place as 1/3 of the housing in the city is flats, making it difficult to run food waste collection. The composting sites allows people to dispose of their food waste and benefit from the compost produced as they can take it to use on their gardens. The remaining amount is used on community gardens which benefits the local environment further. Food waste is restricted to raw fruit waste only, cooked food, meat, fish and dairy attracts rats therefore is not permitted. To prevent smells monitors and scheme members manage the compost buy adding dry materials such as cardboard. This not only benefits the local environment but also the local community encouraging members to work together to sustain and create nutrient rich compost that they can all benefit from. It can also be used to encourage the younger generation to interact and learn about the benefits of sustaining a healthy environment through gardening.
