Residents and groups in Moulsecoomb are working with the council to reduce, re‐ use and recycle more waste. Reducing waste sent to landfill or for incineration results in a saving to the council and these saving will be shared with the community in Moulsescoomb.
On average every household in Moulsecoomb puts out over 10kg of waste a week. Everyone can reduce their waste by:
•reducing waste (eg composting food and garden waste rather than throwing it in the bin)
• re‐using stuff eg giving bulky items away rather than chucking them out
•recycling more If everyone reduced their waste by 1kg every week this would raise £4,500 in a year, 3kg would raise £13,500.
We are inviting groups or partnerships who want to raise cash for the community to put forward their ideas to encourage residents to do their bit, reduce their waste and help increase the pot of money. The ideas might include things like:
•knocking on people’s doors giving them information on what they can do to reduce their waste and encouraging them to support your campaign
• organising competitions between streets or setting up a lottery – with residents who put their recycling out being in with a chance to win a prize
•encouraging people to compost their food and garden waste
You will probably have better ideas yourselves! The incentive for you is to make your campaign as good as possible because the less waste there is, the greater the pot of money. The campaign will run for 12 months from the 1st of June to give you the opportunity to influence as many households as possible.
A panel of local residents will assess the submissions. The successful projects will each receive a share of the money raised over a 12 month period. If the successful projects work together to have a greater impact and avoid duplicating efforts the pot of money will be bigger. Groups can submit joint bids. What
Each successful group will receive an additional payment of £200 at the start of the project to help fund their campaign. This can be used for prizes for competitions, printing flyers or anything else your campaign needs. Other support form the council includes:
• Designing and printing materials
• Provision of additional recycling sites in the community
• Provision of subsidised compost bins (add web link)
•Support establishment of community composting by providing free compost bins, kitchen caddies and technical support from the Food Partnership
• A dedicated web page showing how well the community is doing in reducing its waste.
• Free manual labour days from Mears staff e.g staff can dig your compost areas, create recycling areas, etc
We will report levels of waste on a monthly basis and include the amount of money raised so everyone can keep track of how well things are going. The cash will be paid out after 12 months but we can consider an initial payment after 6 months if requested. How Will The Submissions Be Evaluated? A panel consisting of residents will decide which projects should go forward. Each proposal will be evaluated based on:
• Will it result in residents changing their behaviour and result in less waste being produced?
• How many people will it target – the more the better?
• Is it a realistic plan, has it been thought through?
• Can it be resourced?
•Is the money that will be raised for the group being spent wisely on a project or initiative that will benefit the community?
