What is it?
Shabitat is a recycling depot warehouse located near Saunders Park. It receives no outside funding and is part of a workers co-operative with no shareholders and is a member of the Magpie Co-Operative. They provide affordable furniture, electrical goods, quality second hand clothes and homeware for those on low income.
What does it do?
After talking to a member of staff, we also found out that they provide recycling services for businesses in the local area including; confidential shredding, collection of a variety of grades of office paper, cans, plastics, tetra pak, foil, cardboard, toners and even bio-oil. All funds created are returned to the coop, and invested in sustainable projects. Their website also states that over 58 tonnes of waste furniture has been diverted from landfill and over 2500 items of furniture has been reused in the past year, highlighting their concern over waste.
How does it relate to Environmental Citizenship?
This relates to environmental citizenship as Shabitat focuses on the responsibility citizens have to recycle and minimise the amount of waste that is sent to landfill. They actively engage in promoting the use of recycled furniture and other goods, which would otherwise go to waste. Shabitat has been working towards the three R's (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) and is making a postive contributtion to the locak environment. Shabitat helps to contribute to the Sustainable development goals by helping to create a sustainable city & community and has responsible consumption and production.
