Project Name: Flip-flopsam and Jetsam
Project managers/designers: Nick Gant and Tanya Dean 2011 / University of Brighton, Marine Conservation Society.
Web link: gantanddean.co.uk
Description: Part of the 'Sole Searching' project which researchers the systematic creation of value and meaning by using the embedded narratives, histories and stories inherent in waste or recycled materials - this project developed a 'meaning making' process where community volunteers participating in the Marine Conservations annual beach-clean-ups were rewarded with a pair of flip-flops made from the material they collected by using a converted heat press. The process embeds the object with value and meaning. Each pair has an embossed sole which designates provence of the material and where objects were made.
