Project Name: Poo Bus Project managers/designers:
Web link: http://www.geneco.uk.com/biobug/biobus.aspx Description: Biomethane is produced at Bristol sewage treatment works by anaerobic digestion – a completely natural process in which methane-rich gas is produced by micro-organisms breaking down biodegradable material in sewage sludge and food waste in the absence of oxygen. In 2010 they conducted our first gas vehicle trial by launching the Bio-Bug, the UK’s first VW Beetle powered by human waste. It was hailed as a breakthrough in the drive to encourage sustainable power, being both clean and environmentally friendly - the waste flushed down the toilets of just 70 homes produces enough biomethane to power the Bio-Bug for a year! The GENeco Bio-Bus showcases the possibilities of gas powered transport. After running a successful trial route between Bath and Bristol Airport, the GENeco Bio-Bus is to be used in regular service within the city of Bristol. Added by: Alison Rees
