The STEPS Centre (Social, Technological and Environmental Pathways to Sustainability) is a global research and policy engagement centre based at the University of Sussex, bringing together development studies and science & technology studies. STEPS is working with an international consortium of partners from Africa, Latin America, East and South Asia, Europe and North America, to conduct research projects on sustainability transformations in each hub, and to facilitate learning between them.

The UK research project will focus on transformations to sustainable food systems in Brighton and Hove, in particular looking at the constraints and challenges facing small-medium-sized farms. We will focus (initially at least) on farms that use agro-ecological/ organic approaches, conducting interviews and convening multi-stakeholder events to share findings and discuss their implications for policy and practice. We would like our research to support local farmers using more environmentally sustainable forms of agriculture to play a greater role in supplying the food requirements of the Brighton and Hove city region.
