i360 construction

The Brighton i360 is a scheme to enhance Brighton's position as a top tourist destination and cultural hub. Brighton attracts over 10 million visitors and is the most popular tourist destination in the South East after London and Oxford. See http://www.brightoni360.co.uk/index.html for more information

The i360 will restore parts of the original pier to their 'former glory'. This will include the Victorian tollbooths. Parts of the cast iron supporting structure will also be reused in the new visitor centre and an exhibition will enable visitors to learn about the pier's history. This sustains Brighton's heritage, and thus contributes to environmental citizenship.

The cast iron structure offshore, known as the sea island, will not be affected by the new project, however any wreckage of the derelict pier on the beach will be removed.

The Brighton i360 has pledged to give a percentage of their ticket revenues to the West Pier Trust to support their heritage works. This money will be used for building a new heritage centre on the seafront and offering school visits.

The Brighton i360 has been built with a 'green' sustainable mind, with energy, food waste and transport all taken into account.

The sustainable design is described as "central to the tower's development". Natural ventilation will be used to cool the building. The toilets are planned to use harvested rainwater. While the Pod itself has thermal insulation, double glazing and mechanical ventilation to minimise energy usage.

In the kitchen, waste is planned to be minimised by applying the "eliminate, reduce, reuse, recycle" principle. All of the food waste is planned to be composted. As for purchasing, the new complex sates they will use local and fair-trade providers for products such as organic food and drink. With predictions that At least 50% of our fresh food will come locally from Sussex, Kent and Hampshire.

Lastly, the company state they will encourage visitors to travel by public transport, walk or cycle and to take an interest in the tower's natural environment and cultural heritage, and thus engaging them with environmental citizenship.
