Brighton and Hove Council: North Laine Cycle Contraflows

In order to move towards 'balanced and sustainable' transport services, Brighton and Hove Council implemented a North Laine Cycle regime. One-way streets in North Laines were assessed, making them into two-way for cyclists. The streets then become safer, easier to use and overall more accessible. This project, according to the Council's official website, followed the national guidance promoted by Department for Transport in order to increase safe and widespread use of bicycles. Cyclists and pedestrians alike can have an easier and safer ride, avoiding illegal and dangerous short-cuts. This ability of cyclists to move two-ways is called a 'cycle contraflow.' Allowing the easier movement of cyclists promotes the use of cycle routes and cycle lanes. This creates a greener and more pleasant environment, locally and nationally. The North Laines are then less congested and polluter, however on a wider scale the promotion of green transport allows for the support of the global environment. https://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/content/parking-and-travel
