The Big Lemon Bus Service

The Big Lemon

The Big Lemon is a Community Interest Company founded in 2007 to develop a new kind of bus service. In the world of The Big Lemon, bus travel is fun, friendly, affordable and sustainable. In a nutshell, we aim to develop a bus service which people enjoy, look forward to, and above all, choose to use in preference to private motor transport. This way we can encourage the shift from cars to shared transport and greatly reduce the negative effects of transport on our environment and on our health and well-being. The Big Lemon runs Public Bus Services, Bus & Coach Hire, a Festival Coach Service and a Waste Cooking Oil Collection Service. All our vehicles run on bio diesel from locally sourced waste cooking oil, much of which we collect ourselves in Brighton & Hove. All our vehicles including support vans run on recycled waste cooking oil from local restaurants.

The waste oil is collected from chip shops, restaurants and hotels in Brighton & Hove and across Sussex. It is then processed in a factory near Eastbourne to make biodiesel, a plant-based alternative to regular mineral diesel.

Unlike burning fossil fuels like mineral diesel - which releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere which had been buried for millions of years - burning plant material only releases the carbon dioxide that the plant had absorbed in the last few years as it grew, not any new emissions in our lifetime. If no one used the oil, it would be sent to our already overstretched landfill sites, which in turn emit another greenhouse gas - methane.

The Big Lemon operates a shuttle bus service for University of Brighton students and staff linking the Campuses of Falmer, Varley Park, Moulsecoomb and Grand Parade. There are two services, UB1 and UB2. UB1 links the campuses with the city centre; UB2 is a non-stop shuttle service between Moulsecoomb, Varley Park and Falmer.

The service runs Monday - Friday during University of Brighton term-time (29 September - 12 December 2014 , 5 January - 27 March & 20 April - 12 June 2015) The service is free for students and staff but passengers must show a valid University of Brighton ID card in order to travel.
