Brighton and Hove Living Streets Group

Living Streets are a lottery funded charity whose goal is to make the streets safer, more attractive and enjoyable spaces. They believe that better streets make people healthier, happier and more sociable. Improved street quality increases the use of the footpaths and helps to reduce the use of traditional transport methods.

Case Study in the Regency Ward - New Road

New road was a dull and neglected link in Brighton's city centre. It was dominated by vehicles with narrow foot ways, lots of street clutter and parked cars. The scheme improved lighting, a redesigned surface, the removal of clutter and extensive public seating. Footfall has increased by 160% and vehicle speeds are significantly lower than they were. This has caused reduced traffic on the road and lower emissions.

This scheme was included for regency as transport connects the city in its entirety, so improved links and transport in one area will have a knock on effect to the other areas. This is relevant to environmental citizenship as it has led to a reduction in pollution in the area which actively involved the contribution and help of citizens.
