In 2015 the Coombe Road Area residents came together to save The Lectern Pub (currently closed). It is one of the last remaining community facilities within the area. The pub has been empty for over a year and on sale for development. |We are registering the property as an Asset of Community Value and plan to organise to purchase the freehold or gain the leasehold to establish the property as a Co-operative Pub.
What would success look like? Success would see a community-owned and run pub that has transformed a neglected facility into a central meeting place for the community that changes the way residents feel and behave towards each other.
What we hope for: We hope that a wide cross-section of the community can mobilise to volunteer and take action by participating in a campaign to create a community-owned and community-run pub.
We want the Lectern Pub to become a vibrant hub for the community where long-term and short-term residents can meet and have stronger connections with their neighbours; host activities for everyone to improve wellbeing; create spaces for trying new activities; and link the area to the wider cultural life of Brighton and Hove. We want the Lectern garden to become a space available for the local school and residents in a community that lacks accessible green space.
