The Magpie Recycling Co-operative started in 1990 in Hanover community centre, it then became a co-operative ltd company in 1992 and by 1994 it had introduced a large range of commercial services. The main aim of Magpie is to provide consultation advice to local services and also business recycling services. The Magpie co-op has around 2000 customers in Brighton and Hove city. The Magpie Cooperative provides services, such as: Shabitat, Greenbox, furniture collections and removals, opt-in, gardening waste collection, business recycling and clothes. Shabitat is a warehouse shop which sells furniture, household appliances, electrical goods, second hand clothes and homeware. All funds created through Shabitat are put back in to the co-op or are invested in sustainable projects. Greenbox is an alternative kerbside collection, which can be a one off collection or people can pay a small fee to have them collect their recycling each week. Materials collected are paper, cardboard, cans, glass, foil, textiles and cartons. Some projects run by the Magpie co-op are supported by volunteers.
