Background Information
Manton Road Allotments are located next to fitch drive with access also from plymouth avenue. With 24 full size allotments these community allotments enable local residents a green space to grow their own produce and often sell/donate surplus. Growing your own produce reduces 'food miles' and is often cheaper than buying the produce and promotes a healthy lifestyle through the physical exercise of gardening and the health benefits of fresh produce.
Contribution to Environmental Citizenship
Allotments are an ecocentric and weak anthropocentric movement. Ecocentrism is the belief that nature is vital and has intrinsic value and humans live alongside it. By caring for and managing an allotment individuals are able to care for and look after the environment whilst also providing themselves with food (resources) that, in weak anthropocentrism, must be sustainable. By reducing the need to purchase food from suppliers with 'food miles' and providing soil nutrients as well as habitats for the environment allotments therefore largely contribute to environmental citizenship.
