The Wood Store, set up in 1998, provides a timber collection service throughout Brighton & Hove and the surrounding area, collecting waste timber and reusing it to produce furniture for resale. Waste is collected from individual homes, small businesses and even multinational construction companies. Any wood that is unused is then recycled.
The organisation also allows volunteers to lend a hand by collecting wood, preparing timber for sale, constructing products, and assisting in the running of the store and organisation.
This scheme was the first one of its kind according to the store, and seeks to 'rescue and re-use waste timber' whilst 'create jobs and training for local people'.
Because the organisation is listed as a social enterprise, any profits made is reinvested into the business, allowing them to 'improve facilities and conditions for volunteers and staff'. They do not accept any financial support, allowing them to stay independent and have freedom of choice in what they do.
The organisation contributes to environmental citizenship by promoting sustainability through reusing materials to produce new products and recycling them. In addition to the actions of the organisation, volunteers are encouraged to learn more about being sustainable and practising environmentally friendly services themselves.
