Friends of Hollingbury and Burstead Woods have facilitated the rights to obtain the paths that go through the woodlands in the area. Essentially because these woodlands need protecting and preserving for the future. The paths are in constant use by the public and locals themselves. Conserving the woodlands is for both the people to enjoy the wildlife in the area to thrive.
What they do:
The friends of Hollingbury and Burstead Woods ensure that they meet once a month in order to carry out work in the woods. This is done by cleaning up litter, planting hedges and trees, and ensuring the paths are maintained well. Generally, the group meet up on the first weekend of the month (Saturday or a Sunday) working between 10:00am and 1:00pm. Equipment is provided during the day – such as gloves, shovels and bags.
Woodland Management Plan:
Hollingbury and Burstead Woods were given a 5-year management plan, which was consulted by Brighton and Hove City Council in early 2012. The goals over the next 5 years are as follows: Sustain the woodland, care for the wildlife, balance the woodland tree population, conserve and enhance the natural beauty of the woodland, urge public awareness and enjoyment of the woods, and to enable responsible public access to the woods
Main themes include: creating a butterfly glade and new path - north of Burstead Woods in the South Downs National Park, Increasing the woods to encourage more wildlife, Increasing wildlife habitat and, deterring litter and dog fouling – as well as other anti-social behaviour.
