Located by the train station however, it links to many movements, groups, companies and charities that our in ward. This information was gathered through an interview with people at the Eco-Centre.
All of the organisations inside operate within the local community, thus also in the Regency Ward.
Brighton Peace and Environment Centre office: - Has a library, dvd, and cd section that specialises in environmentally engaged topics - They provide training for teachers in local schools to help them use nature more in everyday classwork - All Environmental events and campaigns are supported by the BPEC - They try to promote environmental community ideas alongside the Green Party - They create the "Green Pages", which lists all events, businesses, and groups in Brighton and Hove that are environmentally engaged.
Green Party: - Similar mindset to the BPEC office - Help abandoned houses get put back in use - Decrease roadwork disruptiveness and extend cycle lanes - Aid businesses in becoming more sustainable - Improve recycling plans for the city - Promote environmental events
Food Ethics Council (charity): - Promote healthy and sustainable foods - Help get more fair trade products into Brighton - Fight for animal welfare - Fight for ethical farming - Food Waste and Climate Change are also frequently discussed topics
Friends of the Earth Limited: - Majorly focussed on campaigning for environmental citizenship. - Main campaigns are: -Transport -Waste -Climate Change -South Downs National Park (fight for it's protection, not to get sold)
Low Carbon Trust: - Manages and Promotes environmental projects, with a large focus on climate change - Main approach is to teach people how unsustainable many of the buildings in Brighton are - They teach how to make buildings less environmentally impactful, as well as offer consultancy, and run events/conferences - Earthship Brighton (low carbon trust building)
Re-Cycle: - UK based organisation that sends used bikes to Africa for them to be reused. - Bikes make it easier in rural areas for transport, children to attend school, faster medical care, getting water from far away, etc. - Unfortunately there is no collection point in Brighton, so the closest location would be in London.
The Bike's the Business: - Small business that specialises in delivery of various goods through the use of bikes to stay eco friendly. - They deliver anything upon request within a few miles of their location
This wide range of connections and links to schemes which are very inclusive of the local community in making the area a better place both socially and environmentally makes the centre very relative to contributing to environmental citizenship.
