Black Rock Regeneration, Brighton

About: Black Rock Regeneration aims to amend economic, social and environmental degradation of a large and blighted coastal site.

The project has collaborated with various community groups to repurpose a large brownfield site for the benefit of rare shingle habitat and public enjoyment. The new site includes enhanced sea defences; improved sustainable links to Brighton town centre and 800 metres of accessible paths to view conservation areas.

To engage the wider public, Black Rock Regeneration has built an outdoor classroom, play area, a cafe, outdoor terraces and toilets). Designing the scheme included various local community groups to ensure that new proposals support pre-existing initiatives.

Early phases (access, habitat creation and sea defences are complete); the remaining work should complete in 2023.

Connection to the Biosphere and its principles: The scheme has improved urban engagement with natural habitats and processes. Black Rock Regeneration has worked to consult local communities and improve local wellbeing and opportunity. The themes around SDGs are clear, and the project addresses a number of sustainability concerns.
