Friends of Brunswick Square and Terrace

Founded in 2008, the Friends of Brunswick Square and Terrace is a local residency group that works to maintain and improve the local community according to residents' needs and requirements. The association engages in small projects such as community clean ups and takes part in other acts of environmental citizenship (Community Works, 2017). An example of this is petitioning on local issues, as the recent signing of a petition to provide Brunswick and Adelaide area with communal bins in order to keep the environment litter free, was pushed forward by the group, eventually leading to an increase in recycling of 70% (Campaigns by you,2017) Meetings are held four times a year by the organisation's twelve members, in which they organise social events and coordinate projects and plans for the future. The organisation's aims include the conservation of trees, plants, and wildlife in order to promote biodiversity, heritage and community interest and to work with other organisations, businesses to ensure that the Brunswick area is maintained as an example of environmental citizenship within a community (Bloomsbury Squares & Gardens, 2017).

Furthermore, the friends of Brunswick Square and Terrace work with the Friends of Palmeria and Adelaide residency association to help improve the local lawns. The local Lawns were originally only for the private use by residents in the surrounding Brunswick town area, ‘the lawns are vital to the setting of the Listed Buildings’ which are facing onto the lawns (FOPA 2017). However these now public lawns have given numerous visitors a great place to visit and socialize. The Friends of Palmeira & Adelaide (FOPA), a resident run association, as well as several other local Brunswick resident associations work with the council. For example, on the issue of the lawns being ill-treated by visitors through barbeques. Thus, it is within keeping with citizenship for the environment as it is an association run by the community for the welfare of the community and visitors.
