Open Architecture - 2004-2006

Cupp funded two projects to develop Open Architecture further, providing opportunities for students and local community organisations to work together in the future.

The first was the production of a book recording, evaluating and reflecting on the major design project to date: The Shoreham Youth Shelter at Kingston Buci First School. The book shows how the architecture students and pupils, staff and parents at the school carried out a collaborative design process that led to the construction of the Youth Shelter (a play area and meeting place).

If you would like a hardcopy of the book, please email cupp@brighton.ac.uk and we are happy to send you one.

Secondly, Students worked in partnership with Falmer High School to design new signs in the school and its grounds to assist visitors who may not be familiar with the site. Students and pupils carried out design workshops including a visit to the university so that the pupils could view and comment on the students' work.

Kingston Buci First School

Kingston Buci First School (Shoreham-by-Sea) is a primary and nursery school for boys and girls aged 3-8 that serves an area of social and economic deprivation. The school has several initiatives to support learning and involve parents in supporting their children’s learning.

Falmer High School - Extended School Programme

The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) announced in March 2003 that by 2006 at least one school in every local education authority will become an ‘extended school’. Extended schools provide services over and above delivery of the formal education curriculum. These will include childcare, health and social care, lifelong learning opportunities, family learning, parenting support, study support, sports and arts, and ICT access. In 2003 Brighton and Hove City Council designated Falmer High School as an Extended Full Service School under the programme.

School of Architecture and Design, University of Brighton

The School of Architecture and Design contains some of the most successful and respected design courses nationally and internationally. Courses available through the school are Architecture and Interior Design, Fashion and Textile Design and Three Dimensional Design (based around the areas of wood, metals, ceramics and plastics).
