Earthship Brighton

Context: Earthship Brighton is the first project managed by the Low Carbon Trust, a non-for-profit organisation emerged in 2001. The Earthship was the first of its kind to be constructed in England. Earthships are radically green buildings, constructed with recycled materials (mainly earth-packed tyres) and generally self-contained in terms of energy production/use and water provision/sewage treatment. Many also incorporate sustainable food production, from the garden to the greenhouse (the south facing glass wall of the building).

Initiatives/project: The Brighton Earthship was conceived as a demonstration of green building, as well as an awareness raising/educational centre for the community. Tours of the Earthship are public, fully accessible, and cover all aspects of the construction/functioning of the Earthship itself: the low-impact materials used, passive solar heating, on-site energy generation, rainwater collection and treatment, and waste water cycle.

Suggestions to the Public: Information about the Earthship is easy to come by on the Low Carbon Trust website, and the Brighton Permaculture Trust website. The Earthship hosts most of the courses held by the Brighton Permaculture Trust, but it is also possible to visit it without attending classes.
