Hollingdean Material Recovery Centre

The material recovery centre, based in Hollingdean, Brighton, collects all waste from East Sussex council and Brighton and Hove city council. The waste (mixed plastic, paper, cardboard, aluminium and steel) is sorted, some being sent to recycling, recovery and disposal facilities. Some waste is sent to the Energy Recovery Facility in Newhaven. Brighton and Hove city council gave Veolia a 30 year contract, in 2003, for their integrated waste management scheme. In order to provide community services, the smaller company Veolia ES South Downs. This local company aims to effectively use the facilities to increase recycling, composting and recovery, to decrease the use of landfill in the Brighton and Hove area. Veolia is involved with local projects to help raise awareness for responsible waste management. Some of these are residential and community groups, employee volunteering and school initiatives. Veolia provide a Schools Pack, where children can visit the recovery centre and are educated about what they can do at home to help reduce their own material waste. There is a Veolia Environmental Trust, started in 1997, involves community environmental management and provides services all over the UK.
