Plastic Free East Dulwich - United Kingdom

Educating businesses on Climate Change

Location - East Dulwich London

Background - This project helps with awareness of reusing or recycling single-use plastics, instead of throwing them away. Additionally, they sometimes do recycle along the coast.

Groups involved - There are many local and online groups that support this project such as: Karavan Eco, Organic Village, SMBS, Forest Hill Supermarket, Healthmatters, BYO, Naked larder, Pebble Mag, Plastic Free Pantry, Plastic Free Party Bags, Plastic Phobia and Primal Suds. This is just a few of their eco suppliers.

Aims - The aims of the project to help combat plastic waste by using education, as there is a problem which stems from ignorance that many people do not know how waste affects their environment and help worsen pollution. With this project it will help more people be accountable for their actions and will stop needlessly wasting plastic goods.

Resources recycled - This project does not focus on manually recycling plastics themselves as they are focused on education others on how to recycle their plastics, but they sometimes have trips for school children where they will make a seaside waste and plastic free with a beach clean-up.

Social impacts - This project helps engage the community to care for on another’s space and to keep themselves accountable for the waste they put into their community thus tightening bonds in the community.

Economic impacts - Many businesses and locals have said to saved money from using less plastic as they tend to reuse their plastic material or that the waste free products saved them money over time. For example, a local said she saved about £16.50 in 6 months on waste free laundry detergent as the price of it is decreased if you reuse your bottle.

Environmental impacts - This project has helped with visual pollution in the area as there is less litter and less plastic waste in the recycling. This has made the area much more tourist friendly and safer for wildlife.
