Falmer (Brighton University Campus)

Checkland Building

Background:

The Checkland building at falmer has had a number of features incoporated into the desgin to make it more environmentally friendly such as; night time cooling, natural vetilation and green roofs. These green roofs are particularly efficient due to the absorption of pollution, and there being a 50% reduction in the volume of rainwater run-off. They also retain more heat within the buidlings in winter and aid in cooling the buildings in summer.

In addition to this there is a Combined Heat and Power unit which supplies both the Sports Centre and Checkland Building. The excess heat used to produce electricity is used to heat the water.

Throughout the university £650,000 has been invested in upgrading the lighting systems. This will cause a 50% carbon reduction.

Contribution to Environmental Citizenship:

The incorporation of environmental concerns into the design of this building means that the university is actively reducing the energy needed to heat and provide power to the buildings. Buildings which are as innovative as this set an example of how to plan for any buildings in the future and be conscious of environmental issues and encorporate ways to reduce energy use into their designs.
