Brighton University- C Change

Background:

Carbon reduction campaign.- lead by the University’s Environment Team. In 2009/2010 the carbon footprint of the Univeristy of Brighton was 12,111 tonnes of CO2. There was a target to reduce this in 5 years, however this has not been achieved but there has been a considerable reduction. This is illustrated in the graph below.

3 key ways they promote to support the campaign:

Switch off- turn of computers, lights and equipment. Some areas of the Uni, such as the halls in Varley, have automatic lights to try and reduce energy comsumption.

Recycle- ‘reducing waste on campus, and reusing or recycling any waste produced’. In each of the halls there are a number of bins in the Kitchen; general waste, a box for glass and tins and a box for cardboard and plastics. Throughout all of the university there are specially designed bins to also promote recycling as shown in the image below. The green area of the bin is a recycling section and the black area is the general waste. There is also a noticeable size difference between the recycling and general waste section to also try and encourage people to think about whether their waste can be recycled. The two bins being together is more effective than there being two separate bins due to people not having the perception that it is more effort to walk to the other bin and recycle.

Travel Smart- make travel choices which are more sustainable such as not driving alone or catching public transport, or using the Big Lemon.

Contribution to Environmental Citizenship:

The University is installing new ideas and initiatives into the students who attend. The habits such as turning off lights when leaving a room and recycling waste contribute to adapting peoples behaviours in ways which can, in turn, alter their lifestyle choices in the future.
