Brighton University

Background Information

Brighton University promote a zero waste culture of ‘rethink, reduce, reuse and recycle’, in order to significantly reduce waste and increase recycling across all areas of the university campuses. This means reducing packaging, cutting down paper use, reducing and recycling food waste, inspiring staff and students to think carefully about the waste produced on campus, and reusing or recycling everything we can. The university has invested heavily in waste and recycling facilities which are standardised across the entire university. The bins are always located in pairs (one recycling and one waste bin), making the choice to recycle just as easy as throwing something away. These bins are specially designed so that the recycle option is larger and a bright green colour, the waste option is smaller and a boring grey colour so visibly looks like the less appealing option.

Other recycling options include:

Batteries can be recycled in special battery recycling bins on all campuses Redundant IT and other electrical equipment is reused/recycled by WasteCare in Southern England. To dispose of your redundant IT equipment, please put in a WEEE collection request vie the EFM HelpDesk. Unwanted clothing and textiles is collected at Falmer, Cockcroft, Mithras House, Grand Parade, Phoenix Halls and Eastbourne, through TRAID collection boxes on site. Since January 2015 the university has been working hard to tackle food waste on campus, by sending food waste from restaurant kitchens to be Anaerobically Digested, and by implementing a series of initiatives to reduce the amount of food waste produced.

Contribution to Environmental Citizenship

The University of Brighton are contributing to environmental citizenship by reducing the amount of landfill waste and encouraging recycling. The university encourages people to think before they throw away. They are also limiting the amount of resources used. The University takes a weak anthropocentric approach to waste.
