Rubble and natural binder

Chippenham contains a mish mash of architectural styles and construction techniques. The old town that is surrounded by the river avon on three sides uses predominantly cotswold stone and timber but as the town expanded, housing estates used materials such as bricks, tiles, blocks, render and steel.

What interests me is how this patchwork of materials can be combined with natural wastes prevalent in the local area, such as agricultural run off, clay and animal waste. Historically these muddy materials were used as a binder between stones but now these waste streams are having a negative impact on the environment, polluting the river and littering the streets. Can the stigma surrounding these materials be removed and re-used in modern construction?
