One Brighton

What is it?

One Brighton is a scheme which involves cutting edge apartment buildings in Brighton that have provided 54 affordable houses in one of the most expensive UK housing markets.

What does it do?

One Brighton has a sustainable water consumption, estimated at 109 litres per resident per day, which is 4% above target and 27% less than the UK housing average. It provides a local and sustainable food source, with the rooftop allotments providing food for residents. There is a large on site food composter, making it easier for residents to recycle. There is no private car parking apart from disabled users, however sufficient bike parking. This shows their promotion of cycling as a sustainable transport method and their attempt to deter car use.

How does it relate to Environmental Citizenship?

One Brighton shows environmental citizenship as it shows the importance of sustainability in many aspects of day to day life and shows active engagement in increasing the use of cycling and managing waste. One Brighton contributes to a number of sustainable goals including good health and well being, as it encourages bike riding, responsible consumption and production, as it promotes the involvement in rooftop allotments for food, and sustainable cities and communities as the water consumption is sustainable and lower than the UK average.
