The Level

What is it?

The Level is a unique green space as it has a large, nationally-important elm tree population which supports a colony of White-letter Hairstreak butterflies. This endangered species lives mainly in the treetops, and the butterfly’s life cycle is entirely dependent on elms for food. The butterfly was spotted at The Level during the park’s restoration, and has also been seen since. Therefore, the Level supports biodiversity in Brighton.

What does it do?

The Level is represented and tended to by The Level Community Forum. They are involved in setting up events centred around The Level. There are regular park events, for example, on the 18th May 2017, there will be a gardening class which teaches garden skills with a focus on conservation. In addition, there are also sessions for bike maintenance and cycle skills, which promotes the use of safe cycling and sustainable transport.

How does it relate to Environmental Citizenship?

The Level Community Forum also play a big part in promoting cycling as a sustainable method of transport and reducing the amount of fossil fuels burned by cars and other vehicles.
