Cupp supported the development of the Brighton and Hove Youth Award. The Award started in October 2003 and aimed to allow young people, especially those ‘at risk’ from social exclusion (e.g. through school exclusion, offending, substance use, looked after young people and those leaving care) to gain accreditation for their learning achievements. The Award got recognition within Brighton and Hove Youth Support Services and an expected outcome of the consultancy was to support the development of the award within youth organisations across Brighton and Hove.

The B&H Youth Award aims to be the first rung on the accreditation and learning ladder for young people aged 11 to 25 years. The key element of the award is that it is flexible and simple for both young people and workers. It rewards and accredits the learning and personal development by a young person and requires the minimum amount of paperwork for the young person and the worker.

The moderation process aimed to ensure that the Awards issued are of an appropriate, consistent and valid standard. The purpose of the project was also to develop coherent links with other accredited learning structures and routes. This project evaluated and developed the moderation process which is a fundamental component of the Award.

The University of Brighton was approached to support the development of the Award because of its knowledge and expertise in the field of accreditation and moderation and its links to youth and community work training locally and nationally. Project partners Brighton and Hove Youth Support Service

The Youth Support Service provides:

programmes that don't cost a lot, fun and reflect things that matter to young people
rewarding experiences
places for young people to express their own ideas, opinions and feelings
taking on challenging activities or developing new skills
helps young people exercise their civil rights

The Youth Support Service works with young people between the ages of 11 and 25 but gives special attention to those aged 13 to 19. They encourage young people and adults to get involved in their services so programmes meet local needs and are what young people want.
