Who we are

Little Green Pig is a registered Charity based in Brighton & Hove. We offer free writing workshops for young people in Brighton & Hove aged 7 to 18. We serve all young people in the city but focus our resources on young people most in need and closest to our future base in London Road. We work in partnership with teachers and families to offer free writing workshops to local schools whose pupils experience social or educational disadvantage. Our after-school and weekend workshops are open to all. We provide fun, creative and excellent learning experiences for everyone – whether you are a young person, a volunteer, a teacher or a parent. Our methodology is based on the proven educational model from London’s Ministry of Stories, with whom we are working closely. Volunteers are a core part of our organisation.

The Project March – June 2015

Following a successful partnership project ‘City Life’ with CUPP Brighton University in 2014, LGP received funding from Awards For All, to run a digital literacy project aimed at 14 Young People Aged 12 -14 to write, film, and edit three 5 minute ‘soap opera’ episodes premiered during ‘B Fest’, Brighton’s Youth Festival 30th May 2015 5pm-7pm at Sallis Benney Theatre, University of Brighton.

Students were recruited from our partner schools most in need, and young people who may not be engaging in school were specifically targeted, with 4 spaces being open to any young person in the Brighton & Hove area. We offered Young People (YP) the opportunity to write, film, and edit their own work.

A key aim of the project was to support widening participation. By using the editing facilities at the University as well as working alongside Uni students, the YP were given the opportunity to see what University is like.

A celebratory event was held at Sallis Benney theatre to share the work with teachers, parents, carers and the wider community. We will also show the work on Latest TV, Brighton’s own TV station with an introductory interview conducted by the Young People.

Evaluation

We will also work with Brighton University students under the direction of Mick Hawksworth, to film ‘the making of’ documentary in order to disseminate the project to a variety of audiences.

The Details

The project was led by Eastenders Script writer Pete Lawson, and Mick Hawksworth, Academic Lead for Widening Participation at University of Brighton Faculty of Arts, and students from University of Brighton. They were supported by LGP Story Workshop Leader Polly Rodgers and a team of 8 trained DBS checked volunteer story mentors.
