Lectern Listenings

Hattie and Rebecca (CO Volunteer) have been out on Riley Road for 2 months where they have listened to various students and long-term residents about the idea of the Lectern as a community space.

Riley Road is close to the Lectern pub and many of the students walk past it on their way to university or when waiting for the bus located outside of the pub. Many of the students/residents had used the pub in the past and had noticed that the pub had been shut for some time. Since the door-knocking more residents have attended the local meetings and have become engaged in the Lectern campaign. This has enabled the Lectern steering group to mobilise the local community and understand community need.

Top loves: - Good housing - Good student life/close to university campus - Accessible and close to town - People know and like their neighbours

Top concerns: - No focal point of community - Nowhere to meet or socialise with neighbours - Sometimes noisy - Little integration between students and residents - Big issue of rubbish on road

Top ideas: - Study space/ work hub with an affordable cafe - A place to hold events, music, fetes - Safe space for young children and teenagers - A space for integration between residents and students - Activities for residents 60+ - Workshops: fixing things, art, music, exercise classes - Allotment/outdoor growing space
