Seahaven Towns Education Development 2006

This Cupp project aimed to pair University of Brighton sociology/criminology students with young offenders/underachievers from Seaford in a mentoring capacity. Brighton University and Seahaven Towns Education Development (BUSTED)

The project ran for 5 weeks and involved 5 young people from Seaford and 7 students. The student mentors' aim was to discuss the young person’s future hopes, aspirations and options, look at any fears or worries associated with taking these up, work on a future plan and build networks within the community to further these objectives.

The positive environment and opportunity to socialise with academically motivated people in a very informal way was rewarded. In taking an informal approach participants enjoyed themselves and asked to come back each week. The students acted as positive role models but on a level which the young people could relate to and they enjoyed spending time with them. Intertwined with this was the underlying sub conscious push from the students to encourage the young people to speak about their interests and what they wanted to do in the future.

The Anti Social Behaviour Coordinator for Lewes District Council put together a proposal for a longer course that was due to start in the Autumn term 2006. Students can be identified/recruited from the Brighton University’s School of Applied Social Science courses and a further project could accommodate 10 university students and 10 young people and could expand its areas to include Peacehaven and Newhaven.
