Mapping Adolescent to Parent Violence (MAPV) Support

The Mapping Adolescent to Parent Violence project has an ambition to raise awareness of the support available for people who are experiencing APV and practitioners who are responding to APV.

The project developed from a CUPP project about intimate partner violence in Brighton and Hove called ‘Hear Our Voices: survivors making a difference’ http://capitadiscovery.co.uk/brighton-ac/items/1079334

Children’s violence and abuse to parents is an issue about which little has been known in England until recently. Even now we have a limited picture of the nature of this problem. It is thought that around 3% of families with teenagers will experience significant abuse from their children with the vast majority being towards mothers. Both young girls (around a third) and boys (around two thirds) are involved. Parents’ experience of violence from their children mirrors in many ways the impacts of intimate partner violence but with the additional difficulty that support agencies are unfamiliar with this form of violence and how to respond. As awareness of APV has developed so have bespoke services but these are scattered around the country and not well publicised. Parents seeking help may have nothing in their area to which they can apply and practitioners themselves are often unaware of the help that is available.

This project involves national and local partners mapping service provision across the South East of England as a pilot in the first instance with a view to extending provision across England in the future. Local partners are the University of Brighton, Brighton and Hove City Council working with community partners Rise www.riseuk.org.uk and AudioActive http://www.audioactive.org.uk, and the private sector HolesintheWall.co.uk; The project will give immediate information about access to agencies offering support to families experiencing adolescent to parent violence.
