Context: The university of Brighton prides itself on its green practices, declaring sustainability as one of the universities core values. Taking the ranking of 2nd greenest university in the country by People & Planet University League in 2016 it’s evident Brighton’s tireless environmental work is yet another thing not going to waste. Innovative building design combined with numerous events and campaigns all contribute toward the environmental citizenship taking place here at the University of Brighton.

Aims: The universities main aim is to spread the message of environmental citizenship to students and staff alike, and help them to help the environment by partaking in environmentally sustainable behaviour. In the terms of energy consumption, the university has implemented the Carbon management plan, a goal to cut carbon emissions by 50% in 5 years.

Initiatives: Building design: Throughout the campus technology such as a Green roof on Huxley, Solar panels on Cockcroft, LED light fittings in Huxley and an energy efficient data centre in Watts have been installed to minimise energy consumption and environmental impacts.

C-Change campaign: Is the universities predominant carbon reduction campaign. The campaign is led by the Universities environmental team and runs activities, games, competitions, challenges, freebie giveaways, social media campaigns, walks, talks, workshops and volunteering opportunities to encourage sustainable behaviour, often with incentives for doing so.

Impacts: Since their introduction, the solar panels have saved the university £40, 000 per and cut its carbon footprint by 100 times. There are no figures yet as to the effects of others measures, however, with the implementation of so many energy saving initiatives they’re undoubtedly positive. The university of Brighton is a prime example of environmental citizenship in action as citizens are taking initiative and doing their bit for the environment.
