Amex Stadium

Background Information

The Amex Stadium and Brighton and Hove Albion Football club sell locally sourced produce on match days since opening the ground in 2011, including the well known 'Piglets Pantry' pies which were set up in Shoreham-by Sea. They then won a contract to supply the Brighton and Hove Albion FC selling up to 10,000 per game all containing as locally sourced vegetables in Hailsham and meat from Burgess Hill. As well as selling local produce, the leftover food or 'waste' food is often donated to various homeless shelters in the Brighton and Hove area. In particular, a single game that was cancelled in December 2016 provided substantial quantities of food for an expected crowd of 28,000 all donated to the homeless.

Contribution to Environmental Citizenship

The Amex Stadium and Brighton and Hove Albion Football club show environmental citizenship by sourcing food locally and supporting the local businesses. This is a form of anthropocentric environmental citizenship but a weak belief, therefore by sourcing locally they are helping to ensure a more sustainable supply of food: economically, environmentally and socially by helping to keep local businesses running, reducing 'food miles' and creating a strong community link with local businesses. By donating leftover food waste they are also acting with republican citizenship ideals because they are acting upon their duties as citizens to help the community by providing a service and reducing the overall wastage of food in a sustainable manner - donating that which would go to waste to those who are in need but cannot obtain their own sources of nutrition.
