Fareshare Sussex

Background Information

''Fighting Hunger, Tackling Food Waste''

Fareshare Sussex is a charity run organisation that collects and distributes food to 90 local charities/community projects across East and West Sussex including many homeless shelters. They collect the food with the surplus from manufacturers, suppliers and retailers that would have been thrown away as 'waste' produce. Instead, the food is distributed across the county and turned into nutritious rich meals for those who are unable to provide their own. In 2016 Fareshare redistributed 468 tonnes of food, contributing to over 1 million meals - helping solve food poverty issues and creating a demand to lessen food waste.

Contribution to Environmental Citizenship

Fareshare Sussex uses weak anthropocentric environmental citizenship morals with the belief that citizens have a right to nutritious food but also that food should not be wasted and as citizens we should ensure it isn't as this would be a waste of environmental resources that we, as citizens, should ensure aren't wasted. As their aim is to reduce unnecessary food waste by distributing unwanted or unsellable foods (that are still perfectly edible) to those who don't have access Fareshare are therefore, as an environmental movement, clearly showing strong contributions to ensuring that people and the environment are treated equally with their motto ''Fighting Hunger, Tackling Food Waste'' helping to prevent waste of the environments resources by providing people who can't afford or access any with the (food) resources.
