Robert Grimshaw - Production Partnership

Robert Grimsaw worked in collaboration with Paul Roberts of Kentwaterjet ltd, to produce a set of set chair, that propose a new possibility for local manufacture.

The 2D profile cutting machine housed at Kentwaterjet ltd workshop in East Kent is most commonly used to cut shop signs, in this instance to cut sheets of 18mm plywood that slot together to form the structure of the chairs.

This is the first part of a process that attempts to connect disparate manufacturing processes within a localised region. In this case the waterjet cutter is paired with a seat weaver based on the other side of town. By re-appropriating production methods to suit new outcomes the companies involved benefit economically, whilst the short distances travelled between each process maintains a low carbon footprint.
