Art in the Park

In summer of 2006 the 'Thumbprint' art installation was created in the park. By the international environmental artist Chris Dury. Formed with York stone slabs and and environmentally friendly Lime mortar base the sculpture represents mans influence within our landscape. 'The pattern is a Cretan labyrinth set into the central whorl of a fingerprint, so to walk it is a meditative journey to the interior.' (Drury, no date)

In a statement about his work Chris says 'I am an environmental artist, making site specific nature based sculpture, often referred to as Land Art or Art in Nature. I also work in art and Science. I make installations inside and make works on paper, works with maps, digital and video art, and works with mushrooms.

My work makes connections between different phenomena in the world, specifically between Nature and Culture, Inner and Outer and Microcosm and Macrocosm. To this end I collaborate with scientists and technicians from a broad spectrum of disciplines and use whatever visual means, technologies and materials best suit the situation.' (Drury, no date)

The piece was commissioned by Brighton and Hove's Art Commision.

How is this contributing to environmental citizenship?

By producing this sculpture the artist is allowing the community passing through the area to think about their impact on the world. Similar to that of your carbon footprint. By thinking about influence on the world people may be inclined to think about how they can make a change closer to home.
