Saunders Park

What is it?

Saunders Park is run by the local community known as "Friends of Saunders Park" a non-profit organization. It is located just off Lewes Road and contrasts to the generally concreted appearance of the surrounding area.

What does it do?

In 2009 the park received funding to set up an Eco Park which includes a pond, an eco-trail, raised beds and information boards about Saunders Park. It was funded by the M&S carrier bag scheme and designed by local schools. The information boards that can be seen around the park (as pictured) provide basic information about ecosystems and biodiversity simplified to appeal to any individual, from children to adults. For example, the boards include questions and answers such as, what biodiversity is?, why it is important?, what threatens natural ecosystems? and even includes descriptions of climate change.

How does it relate to Environmental Citizenship?

This relates to environmental citizenship as it provides education to locals about the importance of being eco-friendly and the benefits for caring about the environment surrounding us. This shows how many locals believe they have a responsibility and a duty to protect biodiversity/ecosystems and show their active engagement in attempting to encourage others. This also shows that our future depends on each one of us embracing the challenge and acting positively towards our environment. Saunders Park contributes to the Sustainable Development goals of Life On Land, as biodiversity is closely thought of and there is also a focus on conservation.
